  • About Manderston Canine Academy

"Manderston Canine Academy started in 2007 with on vision in mind: To develop companionship through understanding and thereby help build lasting relationships between dogs and their owners. Too many dogs end up being re-homed or worse, abandoned, because dog owners never learnt how to communicate effectively with their dogs. We can help change that", says founder and owner Charlene Kruger.

Charlene has over 25 years active experience working with dogs. She is an accomplished dog handler and trainer, registered KUSA Judge and registered animal behaviourist. Her special interests include therapy dogs (she operates a successful therapy dog programme at a Johannesburg hospital) and the German Shepherd Dog.

school crSays Charlene: "Training is not something done to the dog by a trainer. It is something done by the owner and dog under the guidance of a trainer. We rely on synergy in two ways: Firstly, we use our understanding of dog behaviour (Ethology) and modern practical outcomes directed training methods to create meaningful learning experiences for the dog. Secondly, as the relationship between owner and dog develops and both grow in confidence, the synergy that develops becomes a powerful training tool." This approach has proven itself time and time again - even with 'difficult' and older dogs. This is far removed from antiquated and often harsh training methods that are sadly still used by many other training institutions.

We encourage prospective clients to join us on a Saturday or Sunday morning and watch the training in action. There are always members of Manderston walking around who can answer questions, or find someone who can. Our facilities include a coffee shop where light refreshments can be purchased and shaded seating where handlers, family and friends can relax with their dogs.

Our training grounds are located at the back of a large property, which is well shielded from traffic. With easy access from both the N1 and R21 highways, we are ideally situated to serve clients from Midrand, Pretoria, Centurion, Johannesburg, and the East Rand.
Classes are NOT cancelled in case of rain.
